Job Summary

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, archivist/assistant professor to begin as early as January 2025. This search is open to applicants with credentials for appointment as assistant professor tenure-track (PhD or relevant terminal degree) as well as those interested in appointment as a Lecturer (MS). The dedicated and detail-oriented Archivist will manage, organize, and preserve our historical records. The ideal candidate will have a passion for history, strong organizational skills, and experience in archival practices. The Archivist will be responsible for maintaining our archives, facilitating access to materials, and supporting the organization’s research and educational initiatives. The faculty contract will consist of full-time administrative duties in lieu of teaching hours. Some adjunct teaching opportunities could be available.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collection Management: Acquire, assess, catalog, and preserve archival materials including manuscripts, photographs, audiovisual records, digital records and artifacts.
  • Organization and Cataloging: Implement and maintain an organized system for storing and retrieving archival materials. Create detailed records and finding aids to facilitate access.
  • Preservation: Ensure the long-term preservation of archival materials by implementing proper storage conditions and conservation techniques.
  • Access and Reference Services: Assist researchers, staff, and the public in accessing and utilizing archival materials. Respond to inquiries and provide reference services.
  • Digital Archiving: Oversee the digitization of physical records and manage digital archives to ensure they are accessible and preserved for future use.
  • Exhibits and Outreach: Develop and implement exhibits, presentations, and outreach programs to promote the archives and engage the community.
  • Policy Development: Establish and maintain archival policies and procedures in line with professional standards and best practices.
  • Collaboration: Work with other departments within the organization to support their archival needs and projects.
  • Grant Writing and Fundraising: Identify potential funding sources and assist in writing grants to support archival projects.
  • Leadership: Provide clear expectations and leadership to the team including volunteers.
  • Departmental Budget: Assist in the development and overseeing of annual operating budgets.

Educational/Experiential Requirements

  • Education: Master’s degree in library and information science. Archival certification (CA) is preferred. Committed to ongoing education.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in archival work, preferably within a religious or non-profit organization.
  • Skills:
    • Provide leadership and management of the team.
    • Proficiency in archival software and database management, PastPerfect Software.
    • Respect confidentiality of records and privileged information.
    • Maintains discretion.
    • Knowledge of archival standards and practices.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to handle and preserve delicate and fragile materials.
    • Familiarity with digital archiving and preservation techniques.
    • Familiarity with computers and instructional technology.
