Cataloger/Reference Librarian – Louisiana Christian University – Pineville, LA

Job Summary

The cataloger is responsible for maintaining an electronic catalog which allows library users to find needed materials whether in print or electronic. Their primary responsibility will be for original and copy cataloging and providing reference assistance when needed by faculty, staff, and students. Must be a visible Christian leader and give witness as a person who lives a life that honors the Lord Jesus Christ and is consistent with the Statement of Christian Standards of Louisiana Christian University and the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Function:

  • Catalogs all materials purchased by the library or donated.
  • Physically processes the materials to get them ready to be placed on the shelf.
  • Maintains the integrity of our online catalog by adding new records, deleting old records and fixing any broken links.
  • Converts the collection from Dewey Decimal Classification to Library of Congress Classification.
  • Catalogs government documents.
  • Provides overall maintenance and repair of library materials.
  • Assists with gathering any reporting counts for IPEDS.
  • Assists faculty, staff and students with reference questions or detailed research.
  • Keeps informed of the latest developments in the academic library field.
  • Works in person on the campus and in the library at LCU Pineville, LA USA
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational/Experiential Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of library catalog records and online cataloging systems.
  • Working knowledge of Library of Congress Classification system.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Careful attention to detail. Precision and accuracy in all work is required.
  • Ability to problem solve issues in cataloging.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to assist with reference questions and familiarity with library resources.
  • Ability to work as a team member when called upon
  • Mastery and proficiency in the written and spoken English language.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent bending, lifting, reaching and stooping to shelve library materials and retrieve them to work in an office and the stacks.
  • Lifting and carrying 25 pounds or less.
  • Going up and down stairs.
  • Sitting for long periods of time doing solitary work.
