Director of Library Services – Institute for Worship Studies – Jacksonville, FL

Job Summary

The Director of Library Services oversees the Institute for Worship Studies (IWS) library operations to support the mission and curriculum of IWS. The director reports to the IWS Academic Dean. The position is part-time and non-exempt status; 15 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage library services during on-site intensive sessions in Jacksonville, Florida, held every January and June.
  • Oversee the management of library resources to provide effective services for students, faculty, staff, and the wider community.
  • Lead efforts in providing research assistance and library instruction through various channels, including in-person, online tutorials, and email support, utilizing emerging technologies for distance learners.
  • Collaborate with the IWS President, Academic Dean and CFO to prepare and manage the annual library budget as approved by the Board of Trustees.
  • In consultation with faculty and the library Advisory Committee, analyze and strategically expand the library’s print and electronic collections.
  • Hire, train, and supervise library staff as needed in various functions.
  • Provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students on Fair Use copyright rules and digital resource licensing.
  • Establish, document, and manage library operational procedures.
  • Work with the Director of Technical Services to evaluate and implement technology tools that enhance library services.
  • Engage the Library Advisory Committee in updating library policies related to collection development and user services.
  • Partner with organizations such as the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) Reciprocal Borrowing Program, the Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) Reciprocal Borrowing Program, the ACL ILL listerv. And other cooperative agreements with individual libraries or networks.
  • Manage relationships with library vendors for contract updates and resource development.
  • Attend staff and faculty meetings, reporting on library activities to the IWS Board and faculty.

Educational/Experiential Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • An ALA accredited Master of Library Science (MLS or MLIS) Degree.
  • Strong Christian commitment and character;
  • regular involvement in a local church.
  • Supportive of the vision for IWS.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience in a higher education library.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management and coordination abilities in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience with instructional technologies supporting various learning modalities
  • Familiarity with library budget management.
  • Experience in cataloging and organizing materials using tools like Z39.50 and MARC formats and proficiency in data management and reporting within library systems.
  • Familiarity with educational technology tools (e.g. MS Teams, Zoom, MS Office, Canvas, Koha/Bibliovation ILS).
  • Commitment to servant leadership in a Christian context. -Understanding of and experience with diverse populations.
  • Willingness to support the mission, vision, and core values of IWS
