Job Summary
The Outreach and Instruction Librarian will be responsible for preserving, stewarding, further developing, and interpreting the print materials at The Texas Collection and W. R. Poage Library – including but not limited to rare books, maps, cookbooks, and periodicals related to Texas history, local history, and politics. The Librarian will refine and develop collection holdings, provide teaching and outreach services for these collections, help identify items for digitization, and supervise one Library Information Specialist and student workers. This position will play an essential role in the future of Baylor University Libraries and the Texas Collection, University Archives & W. R. Poage Library. Chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, Baylor University’s history is deeply intertwined with the rich history, culture, and heritage of Texas. The Outreach and Instruction Librarian will demonstrate collaboration, vision, wisdom, and ingenuity in providing leadership for collections development, outreach initiatives, instruction, and access. A vital component of this position is expanding the sphere of influence that The Texas Collection, University Archives & Collections of Political Materials at W. R. Poage Library have on campus among students, faculty, and the greater community.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for acquiring, preserving, and accessing books, maps, periodicals, and other print materials.
- Lead and coordinate reference services, answering questions in person, via e-mail, and through the LibAnswers platform.
- Lead, develop, and provide student-centered instructional sessions, workshops, and tours to promote awareness and use of the department’s materials. –Collaborate with Baylor librarians, archivists, faculty, students, and researchers to integrate special collections materials into teaching, learning, and scholarship.
- Maintain familiarity with the department’s collections and their discovery tools.
- Supervise one staff Library Information Specialist and student workers.
- Assist in maintaining successful relationships with potential donors of materials.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in Baylor’s Digitization Center on digitization and curation of digital assets.
- Remain current in emerging technologies used in special collections.
- Pursue professional development opportunities through local and national conferences, meetings, and workshops and involvement in professional organizations.
- Engage in library-wide initiatives through committees and task forces.
- Meet University and Library expectations for service and scholarship, including participation in the academic library community through research, presentations, and writing on topics related to areas of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Texas Collection, University Archives & W. R. Poage Library.
