Librarian Career
I began my career as a librarian…at Nelson University, Evangel University, and Global University. Though I was the library director part of the time, the students thought of me being the reference librarian who helped them.
Describe yourself using a book title: Teach Like a Champion
What’s the best thing about being a librarian? Helping others.
What are you currently reading? Wonderful World of James Herriot; Where Wonders Prevail; When Miracles Happen: True Stories of God’s Divine Touch
How did you as a librarian contribute to your campus or community? Many times I was invited to introduce research methods to classes and I also consulted with faculty to understand what they “really” wanted the students to locate in the library. I also was a member of faculty groups. And, down through the years I have tried to answer questions asked by members of the ACL.
Do you have any specific interests in the library world? I do have an interest in old/rare books. At what was Southwestern A/G University (now Nelson University) we took pride in the collection of rare books going back to about 1675.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work? I like to grow a garden and to raise tulips and other flowers. (I have nearly 200 tulips planted now.)
ACL Involvement
How were you introduced to ACL? I was introduced to ACL by Woodie Moore who was the library director of Evangel University.
Describe ACL in three words: Friendly; Wise; Thoughtful.
What do you value about ACL? Friendship and the assistance offered to those who need help.
How are you or have you been involved in ACL? I have made presentations when we met together. I have answered questions. I have done research on topics, and more specifically I have tried to help solo librarians who already have too much to do but still need to locate information – preferably without having to use an expensive research database.
